Understanding ICD-10-CM Billable Codes & Clinical Specificity

In the ICD-10-CM classification system, not all codes are billable on health insurance claims. Three-character codes such as E11 (Type 2 diabetes) or M54 (Dorsalgia) represent categories and are non-billable. To satisfy HIPAA transaction requirements, providers must report codes to the highest level of clinical specificity, using 4, 5, 6, or 7 characters (such as E11.9 or M54.50).
